Cappadocia: three days among stone and sky

Cave hotels, valleys made for walking and balloons at sunrise. A long weekend that feels much further away than it is.

02 / Why go

A landscape people carved their homes into

Wind and water shaped the soft volcanic rock into cones and towers, and for centuries people hollowed out houses, churches and whole underground cities inside them. Nowhere else looks like it.

Three days is enough to walk the best valleys, see the painted cave churches, go underground and watch the balloons rise at dawn, whether you fly in one or not.

03 / The route

Day by day

Day 1

Göreme and the Red Valley

Start with the cave churches and their frescoes at the open-air museum, a short walk from the village. Late in the afternoon, hike the Rose and Red valleys and stay for sunset, when the rock turns the colour its name promises.

  • Rose Valley
  • Red Valley
  • Sunset viewpoint

Day 2

Balloons, Uçhisar and Pigeon Valley

Get up before dawn. Fly if you booked a balloon, or watch from a viewpoint above Göreme for free. After breakfast, see the strange columns of Love Valley, climb the rock castle at Uçhisar and walk back down through Pigeon Valley.

  • Sunrise balloons
  • Love Valley
  • Uçhisar Castle
  • Pigeon Valley

Day 3

Underground and Ihlara

A day further south, by car or with a small group tour. Go down into the underground city at Derinkuyu, then walk a stretch of the green Ihlara gorge along the river and finish at the rock monastery of Selime.

  • Derinkuyu Underground City
  • Ihlara Valley
  • Selime Monastery

06 / Practical notes

Worth knowing before you land

01

Fly on your first morning

Balloons only go up in calm weather. Book the first dawn so you have spare mornings if it is cancelled.

02

Bring layers

Dawn is cold even in summer, and the day warms up fast once the sun is over the ridge.

03

Two airports

Kayseri and Nevşehir both serve the region. Shuttles run to the villages, and your hotel can book one.

04

Stay in Göreme

Most trails start from the village, so you can walk everywhere on the first two days. Uçhisar is the quieter choice.

05

Check the cave room

Real cave rooms can be dark and a little damp. Look at photos and ask about windows before you book.

06

Shoes for dust

Valley paths are loose and sandy. Trainers with grip are enough, sandals are not.
